When kids are taught geography using the small world approach we see in the reading, it doesn’t make the world too big for them. They don’t miss the big picture which is learning to value their communities and the environment around them. When students are able to connect with their local environment they can, then, connect with environments and communities from all over the world in the future. I chose this particular picture because, even though it is from a superhero movie, young students shouldn’t be overwhelmed with material about the outside world and eventually causing them to just see it as something that is far away from them. The reading discusses creating activities for the class that will give them a “sense of place”; which I understand as giving them a closer-to-home point of view of their environment in order to help them truly connect with it. The activity portrayed in the reading really helps with understanding how to approach small world geography and have students grasp the importance of their local communities. This activity is able to personalize map-making for the students and it helps with giving them a different perspective to their communities and environment. As well as, teaching them the necessary basic skills like how to read the map, how to interpret the symbols and create connections. As a future educator, I understand now that the way we teach specific social studies topics to our students really affects how they view society and their place in it.
